Issue: updating library extremely slow (MSE running with default settings, VBR MP3s)
Solution: start MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials), go to settings tab, select "Excluded file types", add MP3 to file types to exclude
Test environment: Windows 7, Intel Atom (1.8 GHz) based PC, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB HD 7200 RPM
Full Write-up:
On my Atom test machine, for the past while I've noticed that when updating the TouchJams library with my Amazon music (these are VBR MP3s), it took FOREVER - around 10 minutes. Funny thing was, after the update library finished, I'd reset the library, hit Update again, and then things were fast. I was thinking the HD or Windows was caching the files, and therefore the 2nd time around was faster. So, thought maybe the tag reading code was to blame in TouchJams, maybe the code was highly inefficient, 2nd time reading the files was fast due to cache. Well, after 6 hours of looking at the tag reader code, I didn't see anything wrong. Finally dawned on me, MSE - is this thing jacking with the files on 1st time access? Sure enough, that was the case. Furthermore, with MSE using default settings and updating the library, I went into MSE and added MP3 types to the exclusion list. As soon as I made that setting, boom - the update library progress was way faster. I'm guessing this pertains to all flavors of Windows with MSE on slower machines/HDs.
